Personality: At first glance, Naruto comes off as pretty loud and well, stupid. Over-emotional, naive, hyperactive and dressed in bright orange, people may wonder if he is actually a ninja at all and they would be right to, for most of Naruto's traits are entirely un-ninja like.

His intelligence can be described as average at best. When in the ninja academy he constantly failed the graduation exams and when he finally passed he was at the bottom of the class grade-wise. Naruto is slow to understand situations or explanations, often needing them to be "dumbed down" so he can get them. For instance, Fukusaku the sage toad once had trouble explaining the concept of 'Natural energy' to the shinobi, yet once the same scenario was explained to him as though it was like mixing three flavors of ice-cream together, he instantly got it. When faced with an opportunity to learn a new technique he is quick to proclaim that he will definitely master it in a short time, despite having no idea how to go about it, or sometimes before even knowing what it is he is meant to be learning.

Yet he is not as dumb as people first take him for. It soon became apparent that it is much easier for Naruto to learn something by doing and experiencing it for himself, rather than reading hypothetical explanations from a book. Early on in the story, being teamed up with Sakura (the girl he had a crush on who was booksmart and one of the top in their academy class) as well as Sasuke (labelled a genius who could naturally pick up on a skill rather quickly, and who Naruto saw as a rival) provided a lot of frustration for Naruto, because despite doing his best he was often the last on the team to accomplish something and would be subjected to teasing from his team mates.

And that touches on one of the biggest underlying traits for the ninja- a need for acknowledgement. Naruto has made it his life ambition to become the Hokage- the leader of Hidden Leaf's shinobi and a person that the whole village would acknowledge and respect.
An orphan, the spirit of a demon fox had been sealed inside him on the day of his birth and because of this most of the village treated Naruto with prejudice and resentment. The adults attempted to stop him from being enrolled into the Academy and refused to let their children interact with him- they saw him not as a child but as the demon which had destroyed their village and killed many shinobi, including their leader at the time. In an effort to gain attention of any kind, Naruto often resorted to pulling pranks and earned a reputation as a troublemaker. This meant that his ambition of becoming Hokage baffled some and was met with constant ridicule, especially when he did things such as graffiti the Hokage monument; throwing paint over the stone faces of the very people he wanted to be like. Nobody took him seriously but he never gave up, because one thing that Naruto has plentiful of is determination. Even though the reasons have changed, he is still working towards gaining the title of Hokage even now. What started as naive ambition to be recognized has matured as he himself has grown and come to understand the burdens and tough decisions that come with the title of Kage. Over the years the civilians and ninja of both Konoha as well as other nations have come to accept him and even regard him as a hero but he still strives to reach his goal, less out of gaining respect which he now already has but more focused on being able to protect his village and the people he cares about.

Because to Naruto, his friends mean everything to him. He will go at great lengths to help them, even putting his own life in danger without much of a second thought. Living by his "Ninja way", the declaration that he will never go back on his word, once Naruto promises to do something he will stop at no length to fulfill it. Sasuke, who he considered his best friend and rival, deserted the village and went rogue yet after all these years Naruto has never given up. There are times where he has doubted himself- after hearing from Madara about Sasuke's plans for revenge on the village and Gaara informing him on Sasuke's attack on the Kages Naruto appeared to be distraught, so much so that he ended up passing out. He later met with Sasuke, yet even watching the former attempt to kill their fellow teammate Sakura, he still refused to give up. Some of the naivety is gone- Naruto acknowledged that the next time they fight there is a good chance that either or both of them could die, but he still refuses to give up. Meeting with Sasuke's brother Itachi later on gives him a new bout of confidence as the other Uchiha says he believes in him, leaving Naruto as determined as ever. He will stop Sasuke without having to kill him as well as protect the village, there is no longer any doubt in him.

This isn't limited to just friends, however. There is a running joke to readers of the series that Naruto's biggest weapon is that of his 'friendship', but it's actually sort of true.
It has happened several times such as during one of the first story arcs when he forced Zabuza to realize he cared for Haku. Later on Naruto's presence and actions affected Sai, causing the latter to relinquish his secret mission as a double agent, and more recently against the leader of Akatsuki. After the death of Jiraiya, Naruto swore vengeance on the one responsible for it. However upon meeting Nagato, even though he had been the one responsible for his teacher's death and destroying the entire village, Naruto still attempted to reach out to him, wanting to hear his side of the story. Realizing the similarities between them, Naruto decides not to kill him, vowing to break the cycle of hatred instead. This shows how much he has matured, for he now understands the kind of world they live in and what must be done to change it.

One of the most important changes however is Naruto's relationship with Kurama, the demon fox inside of him. Even Kurama warmed up to the boy and started to believe in him. After a lifetime of tension between the two- Naruto hating the spirit inside of him and the fox trying his best to sway Naruto towards anger and thus releasing him, as of this canon point the two are now working together as one in order to defeat their enemies. Naruto vowed to rid the Kyuubi of his hatred, understanding what it is like to be regarded as a monster just as he had with the Kazekage, Gaara. It took time but the fox eventually began to see his point of view, putting faith in the boy.

For all his faults, annoyances and sometimes stupidity, there is something about Naruto and the way he sees people that makes it hard not to believe in him. Many of his friends and superiors have come to recognize it; the power he has in being able to befriend people and influence them into coming around to his way of thinking, the only difference between now and the beginning of canon is that these days he actually has the skills to back up his words.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Naruto is persistent and hardworking, and he never gives up. So much to the point that it can become a little infuriating to those around him. However that unyielding determination is what carries him forward, no matter what he is faced with.

As said before, Naruto cares for those around him. Not only for his friends but even those who are strangers to him- if Naruto believes them to be good he will go to great lengths to help them out, passed the point where many people would simply give up.

One of Naruto's biggest weaknesses is his temper. He lets himself easily get riled up, especially when the subject of his friends (Sasuke in particular) is brought up. He acts on impulse a lot of the time and combined with his lack of patience it means that there are often times where he will charge into a situation head-on without thinking it through.

Another weakness of his would be a short attention span and the fact that, for a ninja, he simply isn't that bright. Whilst during battle he is able to think up fairly efficient strategies on the spot, it sometimes takes a while for him to understand very basic concepts or discussions which can prove to be an annoyance to those around him.

First Person Sample:

[The video feed switches on to provide a blurred close up on someone's face. The user moves back slowly, allowing the image to come into focus as it shows a blond teenager eying the device suspiciously.]

Hey- This thing even on? [A tap on the screen, the teen sighs, exasperated, before looking over to the Poliwag sat beside him.]

You know how to make this work?

[Silence.]

....Didn't think so. Maybe we just...

[Grumbling again as he shuffles in his spot, Naruto holds out the Pokegear a little further as he puts on one of his biggest, brightest smiles.]

Uzumaki Naruto, reporting for duty! Hehe. So, since we can't go home, I'm going to get all the badges and have everyone acknowledge me as the greatest pokemon trainer there is, you'd better believe it!

[He turns, facing the Poliwag once again.] C'mon Gama-chan! Training time starts now!

[His speech is interrupted by the loud growling of an empty stomach.] Er... after we eat, that is.

Does this town have a ramen bar?

Third Person Sample:

After making sure his Pokegear had been switched off Naruto sat back down on the ground, legs crossed as he looked over at the clueless Poliwag, studying it.

"Oi, Gama-chan. We have to have six on a team, right?" The question was met with silence before the poliwag finally responded with a hesitant nod, causing the boy's face to instantly light up. That gave them something to work with!

"Right! So.. you have any strong pokemon friends that wanna join us?" The head-shake suggests not.

"Any pokemon friends that aren't strong yet, but will be once they train with us?" Another shake, and Naruto frowns.

"...You know any other pokemon at all?" A third and final head-shake says no and the boy groans, flopping backwards onto the ground.

"Aww.. this is gonna be hard." He huffs, still frowning as he peers up at the sky, contemplating his next move. Someone said you could buy eggs but he didn't have money for that, plus he had no idea how to take care of one. If Gama-chan didn't have any other pokemon friends then that left only one option- capturing wild ones.

A rustling in the tree above catches his attention, the blond watching the leaves move before he jumped to his feet, that well-known grin back on his face as he pointed up to a bird pokemon resting on one of the branches.

"C'mon Gama-chan, we've got this! Go for it!" Reaching into his satchel, he readies one of the empty pokeballs. They would capture this one for sure- one down, four more to go!
