Well, there's the basic functions. Map, text, voice, video and that crap. But there's also stuff like a calendar and pokeradio which is boring-you will weep for good music.

The flat red thing they give you is a pokedex. You can look up all the information on your new buddy, including their range and gender. Pay no attention to the stories listed, that's urban myth stuff.
