005 - Video
[It's late in the evening and thankfully Naruto is not yelling through the Pokegear for once. In fact he isn't anywhere near as energetic as he usually is.]
Y'know when you can't contact someone on the Pokegear thingies and some of their Pokemon have been sat in your room starin' at you most the evening, that usually means the person's gone right?

Action
Dad? I'm in here.
[Closing the gear and placing it on the bed, he shuffles to his feet and makes his way to the door, opening it. Part of him hopes that Kushina will be there too, but with no mention of her the chances of that happening are slim.]
I'm not really hungry right now. [Said as the door opens, Naruto leaning on the door frame. He doesn't even feel like scoffing down ramen right now.]

[He was floundering terrifically already in this new situation, buckling under the weight of silence Kushina's absence had left behind. It had been difficult enough trying to find his place as Naruto's father before, to take up that role. And now when it really mattered he didn't think he was doing a very good job of it at all.]
That's okay. Maybe in the morning?
no subject
[Or maybe he will wake up hungry at 3am, that's more likely.]
Did ya find anything? [He knows Minato was out looking still. Part of him feels that he should have been too, but he'd heard about what happens when people go missing like that.]
no subject
[It wouldn't do any good to gloss over the fact, to encourage false hope even if he'd be right back out there tomorrow, desperate for a flicker of bright red.
Her team had found themselves stored with the group, not with her. There was no answer from her gear, no way to even connect to it properly.
But it was still difficult to accept that she was just gone. He couldn't accept that.]
I'm guessing you didn't either.
[His son would have been a little happier to see him, if he'd had news to share.]
no subject
Maybe it's one of those weird glitches again or something like the other week, you know?
[Unlikely, nothing like that had happened in ages, but it was the hope he had left right now.]
no subject
[Considering how calm and relatively normal things had been since then...
But he knew, at least, that Kushina wouldn't have disappeared without a damn good reason, she'd never leave the two of them without a word unless she had to.
A small comfort, if the thought even was one at all.]
...We'll find her. [Maybe it wouldn't be tomorrow, or the day after, or the day after, but Minato would never stop looking for his wife. It just simply wasn't an option.] Even if it takes awhile, we won't give up.
no subject
Since he's up, he decides to shuffle on out of the room and head towards the kitchen after all. The pokemon follow, they seem to be just as lost as the two boys are.]
no subject
This was a lot harder than he thought it would be. She would know what to say, what to do.
Briefly he considered just leaving Naruto alone, returning to his own room to mope and drink and try to figure out just what the hell he was going to do now (pity party!), but after a low warning growl from the pair of Luxray still nearby he turned and made his way into the kitchen instead.
Though what the hell they were going to talk about he didn't know.]
It's been a rough month.
[Minato sank down into a chair, elbows propped up on the table, hands covering his face as he rubbed at tired eyes.
Kind of a stupid thing to say, really.]
no subject
Want some?
[He'd already taken two out, placing them on the side before filling up the kettle and switching it on.]
Yeah. I hear about this sort of stuff happening all the time but I guess I never thought it'd happen to any of us y'know..
[A little pout and he slumps down into a chair on the opposite side of the table, waiting for the water to boil.]
no subject
Probably wouldn't eat much, if at all, but it was the thought that counted.]
When we first moved in together Kushina would always stock the cabinets with instant ramen when she knew she'd be gone on a mission and I'd be returning.
[Minato started out slowly, his tone soft as he allowed himself to pull up memories long tucked away. IT'S HEADCANON TIME BOY.
Even the Red Hot-Blooded Habanero and the Yellow Flash had been regular people, who lived regular lives.]
Said she was afraid I'd burn the kitchen down otherwise. [He laughed then, a genuine warm sound even if it was brief.] Almost did, a few times, but I never told her that.
[And maybe it was a desire for Naruto to know those regular stories that prompted him to start talking, to share what their life had been like long before their son had been in the picture.
Kushina's disappearance was a startling reminder that their time here wasn't guaranteed, that any of them could just vanish without warning. Minato had a lifetime of stories to share with Naruto, but how many days did he have left to tell them?]
no subject
Heh, sounds kinda like my kitchen. I mean I can't cook, and I didn't really have like a proper stove or anything, but I had a drawer full of ramen bowls. Plus a special stash of the fancy stuff for special occasions!
no subject
[But his amusement remained despite the comment.
Really it was a wonder either of them hadn't ended up having to be rolled around considering all the ramen they could put away.]
Guess we should add cooking lessons to our training each day, huh?
no subject
Hehe, then when she's back we could cook her something really great. She'd be real surprised, I think.
no subject
[Naruto inheriting both their stubborn faith-fueled streaks was honestly a blessing- it was hard to find the words to tell himself to stay positive, to not indulge the grief he felt at Kushina's loss.
Sure he could put on a smile and remind them all that it was only temporary, that they would be reunited again and everything would find a way to work itself out. But outside of the duty he felt to just do what needed to be done (that he was, admittedly, not doing so well at thus far), Minato was still human. Kushina had been in his life so long that he wasn't quite sure yet how to be "himself" without her there to remind him.]
You know... if you ever have questions about her, or, ah... us, I'd be happy to answer them.
no subject
I guess we still don't really know that much about each other, huh. I mean compared to normal families that've always lived together.
[He probably has a whole list of things to ask. It reminds him though, of the first conversation with Kushina.]
When I first met Mom, y'know when I was training to control the Kyuubi chakra, I said the one thing I always wanted to ask her was how you met. [He'd never heard the other side of the story, though! Elbows up on the table, his chin rests in his palms as he starts talking again.]
She said when you guys were in the Academy she thought you were kinda girly, but did you always know you liked her?
1/2
[Oh my lord Kushina why would you even tell him that. He tried to duck his head down to hide the warmth that spread across his face, one hand moving to rub at the back of his neck.]
Kinda girly, huh.
[Stalling. Stalling.]
no subject
Well, we were pretty young when she came to Konoha. Looking back, I guess it's easier now to explain how I felt about her, but at the time I didn't really understand it at all.
[Lessons with the number one perverted hermit happened some time later after all.]
She always had my attention at least. I'd never seen hair that bright before, that beautiful... She's always had this presence about her, more often than not I'd find myself thinking about her, wanting to talk to her.
[Aaaaand there's the embarrassment again, but it was accompanied by a smile that time, a fondness in his tone.]
Of course I'd usually not be able to say anything at all and ended up face first in the mud when she'd had enough of my acting weird and made her escape.
But, I think I always knew, it just took us both a few... trying years to figure out what love was and what it meant to us. Whenever I thought about the future she was right there with me, and it just seemed so natural I never even considered that she wouldn't be.
no subject
He's listening properly though, and smiling widely. It made sense to him, actually there were some similarities with how he had acted towards Sakura at times, and hearing about his parents younger days was fun.]
That's cool y'know.
no subject
[He'd been prank target number one more times than he could rightly remember for daring to share her dream of becoming Hokage. The horrors that lurked in his memories...]
But it was worth it. Love always is, I think. I certainly wouldn't be the man I am today if it wasn't for her.
no subject
[There's also a pause here. The longest pause, as he debates whether saying something. Minato may know the answer, since he's Dad and all cool and knowledgeable about everything, but it's also hella embarrassing because he's Dad.]
Those things you said, that's kinda how I always felt about Sakura-chan. But she likes Sasuke.
no subject
There was a hint of a smile on his expression, both at Naruto's confession and leftover from his own previous line of thought. But Minato listened to his son, exhaling a thoughtful hum before he spoke.
Shit, he'd always thought he'd have a few years before he'd have to dole out relationship advice.]
You're all still young Naruto, your interests today... they could be something completely different tomorrow. Whether it's a hobby or even the person you're attracted to.
[Says the guy that knew he'd marry a certain redhead when he was like ten. A WOMAN'S HEART IS AS FICKLE AS THE AUTUMN SKIES~
He'd heard something similar from Jiraiya when he'd muster up the courage to talk about his feelings for Kushina... and he'd hated hearing it every time, just as much as it probably irritated Naruto now. Still, there was some merit to what his Sensei had tried to make him see (Plenty of women out there Minato! Why settle for just one?)- that you really needed to think about this sort of thing, and know completely what you were getting into. That you had absolutely no doubt when it came to the person you were planning on spending your life with.]
But... [Because he was sympathetic to how his son felt, the confusion, the frustration at not knowing what to do.] sometimes that feeling lingers, and grows into something you can't ignore. Your mother and I were very lucky to find each other, but we certainly had our fair share of arguments and stumbling along the way.
If you believe it's meant to be... it's worth fighting for, isn't it?
no subject
Yeah. [A pause, as he decides that he definitely agrees with that.] Yeah, it is.
I mean not that stuff like that even matters anyway right now, you know? [Gotta save the world! And be Pokemon master! All these other things to do that come before romance. Still, it's something he thinks about now and again.
Another short pause- and a random change of topic.]
You know there's hot springs in Blackthorn? We should all go some time. [Actually that... isn't entirely unrelated to the talk of girls and Jiraiya. oops.]
no subject
[A hum of agreement as he stood, pausing to ruffle Naruto's hair on his way to the now whistling kettle of water.
Phew. Didn't screw that one up, one dad point for Mini.]
You have plenty of time to worry about it.
[He turned the stove off, a bit quiet as he set about pouring water into the cups of ramen and setting the kettle back on a cool eye. Hot springs, huh. Maybe it wouldn't be so terrible to relax for awhile, after they finished any business in Violet.
Distractions never hurt.]
And I don't see why we couldn't make a trip up to Blackthorn, provided the others agree to it.
[Aaaaand he's bringing their late dinner back to the table, setting one cup down in front of his son before returning to his seat with his own.]
I'd like to fly down to Goldenrod first though, but if you guys want to go ahead it wouldn't take me long to catch up.
no subject
[Blink blink. The incoming ramen distracts him for a moment- grabbing some noodles and blowing on them a second before eating them.
Oh right-]
Actually maybe I'll go too. Well- I dunno, I'm going to ask Sakura-chan what she wants to do, but I was thinking of picking up some of those changing stones for my pokemon, you know the ones I mean?
no subject
That's why I wanted to stop there before we go anywhere else, some of my team will need them soon. ...Maybe some TMs too, depending. Either way it would be a short trip.
